David Broido - Special Makeup Effects Artist

As a child, I was fascinated with film and television.  It was at the age of 9, when I first saw John Carpenter's 'The Thing' and Rob Bottin's breathtaking, beautiful animatronics used in the film. It was the same year that 'T2: Judgement Day' came out, so I also became obsessed with Stan Winston and his work, at the time. It was in 1991 that I knew special makeup effects was what I wanted to do with my life. Then Jurassic Park happened in 1993. I was sucked in.

I immediately began obsessing over animatronics & robotics, and even as a young fella, and was able to see past the magic of the setting/world that the film takes place in, and straight into the cogs and gears of how the film and it's creatures were physically made and came to life on the screen.

At age 10, I was making short skits with a camcorder. By age 15, I had started to put together more concrete work in short films, experimenting a little bit more with special makeup effects. By age 20, I had made several full-length films and a few documentaries, and had begun to seriously experiment with special makeup effects.

By age 25, I had served two years with the U.S. Army as a Special Operations Paratrooper in the 82nd Airborne Division. I would dabble with various makeup techniques on a daily basis to simulate biologically realistic combat wounds real enough to convince various unit medics, with no formal training. By age 30, I had attended and graduated from the famous Tom Savini Special Effects Makeup School.
